containers/holding/hands/feet

images made in conversation / with Giles Bailey

Reading the same books, drawing on the same etching plates. Our conversations around the books we were reading - there’s a lot of death, love, water, birds - and the resonance from these ran into other drawings and works I was making.

Containers reappeared in the images and we spent time looking at Morandi’s paintings of vessels, self contained objects in themselves. I began thinking about how containers can be porous and (magically) have one continuous surface - outside / inside. They can contain things visibly and invisibly; I could use them to hold elements of the conversations we were having and things we were reading, they allow for spillage as well as containment and holding.
